Choosing the right thickness of natural stone slab is a decision that goes far beyond aesthetics - it is a key parameter affecting mechanical strength and installation method. Incorrect calibration of this dimension carries the risk of fatigue cracks or excessive load on the supporting structure. Countertops and work surfaces

The thickness of a countertop determines not only its impact resistance, but also the possibility of creating overhangs without additional support.

  • The 3 cm standard is recommended for most projects, especially in the case of marble. It ensures high rigidity, allows for the installation of hob and suspended sinks, and does not require a full slab underlay.
  • The 2 cm variant is increasingly used in modern, minimalist designs and for so-called mitre joints (gluing the edges at an angle of 45°, which visually thickens the structure). However, it requires appropriate reinforcement of the cabinet structure to prevent deflection.

Flooring and wall cladding

Here, it is crucial to distinguish between ‘hard’ stones (e.g. granite, quartzite) and ‘soft’ stones (e.g. marble).

  • Hard stones (1,5 - 2 cm) - due to their high compactness and resistance, slabs with a thickness of up to 1.5 cm are ideal for floors, while reducing the height of the floor structure.
  • Soft stones (2 - 3 cm) require greater mass to maintain resistance to cracking. For large floor slabs, a minimum thickness of 2 cm is recommended, and optimally 3 cm, which eliminates the risk of damage resulting from substrate stress.
  • Vertical walls - in order to reduce the load on the fastenings, the thinnest possible slabs (usually 1,5 - 2 cm) are used on walls.

Decorative elements

Designs using onyx and semi-transparent quartzite have their own rules.

The optimal thickness for panels with backlighting is 1 - 2 cm. The thinner the slab, the higher the light transmission and the clearer the pattern. However, it should be remembered that onyx is a fairly fragile material. With thicknesses of around 1 cm, large-format elements may require additional protection, e.g. a layer of tempered glass, to create a safe and aesthetic surface.

The optimisation of stone slab thickness is a result of the specific characteristics of the material and the anticipated static loads. It is a mistake to automatically use the thinnest slabs in order to reduce costs - these savings are often illusory and generate risks during processing and use.
